Where to Stay in Uluwatu

Where to Stay in Uluwatu

A local guide to the areas of the Bukit Peninsula

"Uluwatu" is used for most of Bali's Bukit Peninsula, the dry, cliff-lined southern tip of the island. Each part of it has a very different feel.

We run six private pool villas in Ungasan, so we know the area well. Here's an honest look at each part, and who it suits.

Area by Area

Bingin & Padang Padang

Cliffside lanes and steps down to small surf beaches, with lots of cafés, yoga studios and boutique stays. Lively and social. Less ideal with small children, as many beaches are reached by long stairs.

Uluwatu Cliffs & Pecatu

The far west of the peninsula: dramatic cliffs, the famous Uluwatu Temple, world-class surf breaks and many of the big resorts and beach clubs. It's the busiest part of Uluwatu, so expect traffic on the main road at peak times.

Ungasan & Melasti

A quieter, more residential area in the south of the peninsula, where our villas are. Melasti Beach, with its white sand and turquoise water at the foot of limestone cliffs, is about 10 minutes away, and Green Bowl and Pandawa Beach are close by. You're still a short drive from the beach clubs and the Uluwatu cliffs.

Jimbaran

A wide, sheltered bay on the north side of the peninsula, known for seafood dinners on the sand at sunset, with calm water. It's the closest part of the Bukit to the airport.

Nusa Dua

A planned resort area on the east coast with large international hotels, kids' clubs, manicured beaches and calm, swimmable water.

Which Area Is Right for You?

With kids: Ungasan or Nusa Dua. Both are calmer, and in Ungasan a private villa with your own pool means the children can swim whenever they like.

As a couple: Bingin for cafés and surf, the Uluwatu cliffs for sunsets and resorts, or Ungasan if you'd rather have a private pool villa to yourselves.

First time in Bali's south: stay central on the peninsula. From Ungasan, Melasti is about 10 minutes away and the rest of the Bukit is an easy day out by scooter or with a driver.
